Major League Soccer (MLS) is a men's professional soccer league that represents the sport's highest level in the United States and Canada. The league was founded in 1996 after the USA hosted the 1994 FIFA World Cup, seeking to capitalize on the expected surge in soccer popularity in the country. The league comprises 29 teams, 26 in the U.S. and 3 in Canada, since the 2023 season. The league operates under a single-entity structure in which teams and player contracts are centrally owned by the league. Each team has an investor-operator that is a shareholder in the league. In order to control costs, MLS shares revenues and holds players contracts instead of players contracting with individual teams. The league is not as prestigious as European football leagues such as England’s Premier League, but it has attracted international stars such as David Beckham, Thierry Henry, and Hristo Stoichkov.
