Kraken History

Before the Kraken, Seattle hadn't seen an NHL team since the Metropolitans, who won the Stanley Cup in 1917. Fast forward more than a century, and the Kraken’s debut brought hockey back to the Emerald City. The team was founded as the NHL’s 32nd franchise expanding the league to a new market on the West Coast.

The name "Kraken" itself is a nod to the sea monster of Scandinavian folklore, which fits perfectly with Seattle's maritime history and the city's location near the Puget Sound. The Kraken's branding, from the ocean-inspired color palette to the tentacle-clad "S" in their logo, is one of the most distinct in the NHL.

The Kraken's first season was the 2021-2022 campaign, with the team making its debut in October 2021. Although the Kraken faced challenges as an expansion team, with growing pains typical for new franchises, they showed promise with a competitive lineup and an exciting fan base that quickly embraced them. The team's home games are held at the Climate Pledge Arena, a newly renovated venue that is part of Seattle’s commitment to sustainability.

Kraken Players: Stars of the Deep

Matty Beniers: The first draft pick in Kraken history, Beniers, taken second overall in the 2021 NHL Draft, has been pivotal in shaping the identity of the team. His playmaking skills, vision on the ice, and strong two-way game have already earned him recognition as one of the league's rising stars. Beniers' potential as the cornerstone of Seattle’s future is undeniable, making him one to watch as he continues to develop.

Jared McCann: One of the team’s leading scorers, McCann has been a reliable offensive presence for the Kraken. His ability to find the back of the net, combined with his work ethic, makes him a fan favorite. In the 2022-2023 season, McCann led the team in goals, proving his value as a top-line forward.

Philipp Grubauer: The Kraken’s number one goaltender, Grubauer, is a crucial part of the team’s success. A former Vezina Trophy finalist, Grubauer brings both experience and skill to the net, often serving as the last line of defense in tight games. His ability to make highlight-reel saves has given Seattle fans confidence in their goaltending for the 2024 season.

Jordan Eberle: A veteran in the NHL, Eberle provides leadership both on and off the ice. Known for his quick hands and offensive instincts, Eberle adds a layer of experience to the Kraken’s roster. His ability to score clutch goals has been invaluable for the team in key moments.

Vince Dunn: Dunn anchors the Kraken's blue line with his mobility and offensive flair. As a defenseman who can also contribute on the power play, Dunn is essential to Seattle’s strategy. His ability to transition the puck from defense to offense is critical in a fast-paced game.

Kraken Performance

As a new franchise, the Seattle Kraken faced typical expansion-team challenges in their first season. However, they exceeded many expectations by showing flashes of brilliance and competing with more established teams. Their inaugural season in 2021-2022 saw the Kraken laying the foundation for future success, with players quickly gelling and the team forming a distinct identity.

By their second season, the Kraken made significant strides, finishing higher in the standings and narrowly missing the playoffs. This rapid improvement indicated that the Kraken were evolving faster than many had anticipated. Seattle fans saw the team come together as a cohesive unit, building chemistry and fostering a culture of hard work and determination.

Seattle Kraken 2024-2025 Season

The Seattle Kraken's 2024–25 NHL season concluded with a 35–41–6 record, totaling 76 points and placing them seventh in the Pacific Division, thereby missing the playoffs for the second consecutive year.

The season began with optimism under new head coach Dan Bylsma, who was promoted from the Kraken's AHL affiliate, the Coachella Valley Firebirds, following the departure of Dave Hakstol. However, the team struggled to find consistency, leading to Bylsma's dismissal after just one season. In a significant front-office shift, General Manager Ron Francis transitioned to the role of team president, while assistant GM Jason Botterill was promoted to general manager.

Offensively, the Kraken averaged 2.99 goals per game, ranking them near the league average. Defensively, they allowed 3.20 goals per game, highlighting challenges in their own zone. Jared McCann led the team with 61 points (22 goals, 39 assists), while Jaden Schwartz topped the goal-scoring chart with 26 goals. Chandler Stephenson contributed 51 points, and young centers Shane Wright and Matty Beniers added 44 and 43 points, respectively, showcasing the team's developing talent. On defense, Brandon Montour stood out with 18 goals and 23 assists, though his -22 plus-minus rating indicated defensive struggles. Vince Dunn, despite missing 20 games, contributed 39 points from the blue line.

Goaltender Joey Daccord set a franchise record by appearing in 57 games, recording 27 wins, a 2.71 goals-against average, and a .907 save percentage. Despite his efforts, the team's defensive lapses often left him vulnerable, as evidenced in high-scoring losses like the season-ending 6–5 defeat to the Los Angeles Kings.

The Kraken experienced both highs and lows throughout the season. A notable highlight was a 5–1 victory over the San Jose Sharks, where McCann scored twice and the team dominated the second period. Conversely, close losses, such as a 2–1 defeat to the Vegas Golden Knights, underscored the team's inconsistency.

Looking ahead, the Kraken aim to build on their young core and address defensive shortcomings. With a new general manager at the helm and a search for a new head coach underway, the organization is poised for a pivotal offseason as they strive to return to playoff contention in the 2025–26 season.
