Green Day is an American rock band formed in the East Bay of California in 1987 by lead vocalist and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, together with bassist and backing vocalist Mike Dirnt. The band's sound is often compared to first wave American and British punk rock bands such as the Ramones, Sex Pistols, and the Clash. Stylistically, they have been characterized as punk rock, pop-punk, skate punk, melodic punk, alternative rock, and power pop. Green Day's major-label debut, "Dookie," released in 1994, became a breakout success, and the band has since explored various musical styles, including post-punk and pop-rock. The band's lineup has remained consistent since 1992, and they have released several successful albums, including "American Idiot" and "21st Century Breakdown".
