Wicked has become a Broadway phenomenon, breaking records across the globe for sales and setting a new standard for musicals.
The show is based on the book ''Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West." Set in the fictional land of Oz, it chronicles the relationship between Elphaba and Glinda Upland, who eventually become the Wicked Witch of the West and Good Witch of the North, respectively.
The pair met in college and were polar opposites, but eventually a friendship developed and they struggled to remain close as their opposing viewpoints became more and more prevalent in their lives. The musical numbers in the show are extremely popular, including For Good," Popular" and No Good Deed."
The musical debuted on Broadway in 2003, and became a fan favorite quickly, regardless of mixed reviews. The show eventually hit its stride and received ten Tony Award nominations in 2004, taking home three statues - Best Actress," Best Scenic Design" and Best Costume Design."
The shows commercial success has been unparalleled - since the North American tour began in 2005 it has sold out almost every show, grossing over $155 million. Tickets for four-week stop tend to sell out very quickly, sometimes less than eight hours.
