Producers News and Information

The Producers is a Broadway Musical adapted from a 1968 film, and has become so popular that there are performances throughout the country on a national tour.

The film, based on the premise of two theatrical producers scheming to sell interest in a Broadway flop that becomes successful, was adapted for the stage by film creator Mel Brooks. The show includes a lot of crude humor, including caricatures of Nazis and homosexuals, plus it pokes much fun at show business.

The Broadway production originally starred Nathan Lane and Mathew Broderick, and was extremely popular, both critically and commercially. The show won 12 Tony Awards, and holds the record for the highest single day box-office gross of $3 million. The musical is more upbeat and pleasant than the film, with a more pleasing ending.

There have been extended productions in London, the UK and Las Vegas. Lane starred again in the London shows, which were very popular. In Las Vegas, David Hasselhoff topped the billing for the show, which was trimmed of songs and an intermission, coming in at 90 minutes. Productions have also been successful in Canada, Australia, Isreal, South Korea, Spain, Brazil, New Zealand and Italy, among others.
