Roger and Hammerstein's award-winning musical South Pacific is traveling to a number of cities over the next year, including a 40-show stint in San Francisco, Calif. in September of 2009 and 30 performances in Seattle, Wash., in the beginning of next year.
The story is based upon two James A. Michener short stories from the book "Tales of the South Pacific," which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1948. Racial issues are of primary concern in the story line. The lead characters deal with love war, love, and prejudice, set on the background of the South Pacific Island during Ward War II.
The show is known for its thought provoking themes, along with classic musical numbers such as "Some Enchanted Evening," "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair," "Happy Talk," "Bali Ha'," "Younger than Springtime," and "I'm in Love with a Wonderful Guy."
The musical is drawn from the James A. Michener novel, "Tales of the South Pacific," which was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1948. The production garnered a Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1950. An equally-successful film followed in 1958.
After the original 1949 Broadway Play, the show also was featured on the West End in 1951 and again in 2001 with a Revival, as well as a 2008 Broadway Revival.
