Sister Act: A Divine Musical Comedy is playing at New York's Broadway Theatre from now through January 2012.
The musical is based off the 1992 hit comedy film of the same name, and produced by none other than Whoopi Goldberg. It has been performed all over the world like Atlanta in 2007, Hamburg in 2010, and Vienna in 2011. While it's currently running on Broadway, it's also expected to reach Utrecht in the Netherlands in 2012.
This divine comedy is full of divine songs like "Lady in the Long Black Dress," "Sunday Morning Fever" and "Take Me to Heaven."
The New York Post raved about the show, saying "Big, glitzy numbers are the toast of Broadway musicals. The only thing better? Big, glitzy numbers . . . with nuns! "Sister Act" has plenty of both—and it's one of the season's happiest surprises. Menken evokes the lush, funky sound of Philly soul without falling into mere pastiche: "When I Find My Baby" starts off like bedroom R&B before the lyrics take a hilarious turn. "Take Me to Heaven" and "Spread the Love Around"bloom into full-throttle disco epics, the latter building up to an ecstatic finale."
Deloris Van Cartier finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time when her no-good, gangster boyfriend and his friends kill someone in front of her. Terrified, she runs to the police station for help and is soon assigned to the Witness Protection Program.
Soon, Deloris finds herself at The Holy Order of the Little Sisters of Our Mother of Perpetual Faith a convent headed by the strict Mother Superior who doesn't allow Deloris to drink, smoke or dress in her favorite revealing outfits. She's soon assigned a new name and new garb, but that doesn't stop her from heading out to the nightclub when things get boring.
Toward the end of Act I, Deloris realizes the seriousness of her ex's death threats, and she agrees to not leave the convent again. She's forced to wake early the next day at 5 a.m. to join the choir and once there, she finds her true calling as a choir instructor.
Act II begins with the choir raking in tons of money from their new and improved choir, enough money that the entire church has been remodeled. The downside? Deloris' ex spots her picture in the newspaper and will stop at nothing to see her dead. He and his goons plan a way to sneak into the convent dressed as nuns, but they soon find that Deloris has friends and the strength of God on her side.
