Shrek the Musical is back in New York's Broadway Theatre! David Lindsay-Abaire and Jeanine Tesori created music and lyrics for this unforgettable family experience based on the 1990 book Shrek! by William Steig.
The 2009 cast of Shrek the Musical is Brian D'Arcy James (as Shrek), Sutton Foster (as Princess Fiona), Christopher Seiber (as Lord Farquaad) and Daniel Breaker (as Donkey).
In 2001, the book was turned into a DreamWorks film starring Shrek, the lovable, grumpy and unrefined ogre. At seven, Shrek's parents kick him out, and he winds up living in a swamp. Soon, all kinds of magical creatures start turning up in his swamp after being exiled from the Kingdom of Duloc by the evil Lord Farquaad. Shrek decides to talk with Lord Farquaad to get his swamp back, and on his way meets the talkative, hilarious Donkey.
Meanwhile, Lord Farquaad decides that he wants to marry a princess so that he can become a king. The only problem is that Princess Fiona, whom he's chosen from three eligible bachelorettes, is trapped in a castle surrounded by a fire-breathing dragon. Oh, and she turns into an ogre at night, but Lord Farquaad didn't bother to listen to that part.
Lord Farquaad promises Shrek the deed to his swamp if he can rescue Fiona, so he and Donkey set out on an unforgettable quest. After battling the dragon (who falls in love with Donkey), Shrek and Donkey save Princess Fiona. Just before Princess Fiona and Lord Farquaad marry, Shrek breaks into the ceremony and professes his love for her. Then, the sun sets and she turns into an ogress, which disgusts Lord Farquaad. Together, Shrek and Princess Fiona live happily ever after.
