Posted 6/18/2009
Riverdance has brought Irish step dancing to the forefront of pop culture, and fans from across the globe have embraces the fast-paced form of dance.

The first performance was at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1994, including Irish Dancing Champion Jean Butler, Michael Flatley and the Celtic Choral group Anuna performing a score written by Bill Whelan. The five-week Dublin show was sold out, and the show finally made its way to America in March of 1996 at Radio City Music Hall - it was a massive success.

Riverdance shows are performed all over the world, in theaters big and small. There are a number of performing companies around the globe, including Boyne in North America, Corrib in Europe and Foyle in Ireland.

The Boyne Company includes Craig Ashurst, Liam Ayres, Maria Buffini, Alana Mallon and Marty Dowds as leads, with the latter as the dance captain. The band includes a number of authentic celtic sounds, including the bodhran, uilleann pipes, low whistle and tin whistle.

The performances tell the tale of new-world negotiations with elemental powers through electric song and dance, including a rock-like setting that combine the dancing with fast-moving legs and stiff upper-bodies, fused with moments of Spanish flamenco and American tap dancing.
