The Marvelous Wonderettes, based on the book by Roger Bean, is back at the West Side Theater in New York, New York for 129 performances! Featuring songs like "Lollipop," "Dream Lover," Lipstick on Your Collar," "It's My Party," and "Stupid Cupid," this is one prom night you don't want to miss.
The show combines a mix of pop music from the 1950s and 1960s to tell the story of Springfield High School and, more specifically, the Springfield High Songleaders: Betty Jean, Cindy Lou, Missy and Suzy.
The performance begins on prom night with the Songleaders for entertainment and the audience as the promgoers. The girls explain that they were not originally scheduled to be the entertainment. In fact, the boys from the glee club were supposed to, but the leader got suspended for smoking.
Later, the girls find out that they have all been nominated for prom queen, along with another girl from their homeroom. However, it's not just a popularity contest. Each girl has to perform a talent. Suzy, who uses a lemon twist while blowing giant bubbles with her gum, is voted the winner and she picks her date to be the prom king.
Ten years pass during intermission…literally. When the audience returns, they are met by the principal announcing the ten year reunion. Everyone is there except for Suzy, who shows up noticeably pregnant. During the course of the show it becomes apparent that there is trouble in paradise for Suzy and her prom date, now husband. And Missy is practically begging for a proposal. Will the girls work everything out before the end of the reunion?
