The stage production of Mamma Mia is touring North America and London through 2009, including short stints in the South, plus longer stops at the Mandalay Bay Theatre in Las Vegas and the Winter Garden Theatre in New York City.
Mamma Mia features a collection of songs from the Swedish sensation ABBA, set on the backdrop of a family's story on a Greek isle. It tells the tale of Sophie, who is planning the dream wedding to the love of her life. One thing is missing - a father to give her away.
Sophie's mother, Donna, knows of three men who could possibly fill the role, and Sophie invites them all to the wedding, without informing Donna. Entertainment surely ensues, as Sophie tries to find her father and awkwardness abounds.
Songs from this iconic production include "Dancing Queen," "Knowing Me, Knowing You," "S.O.S.," "take a Chance on Me" and "The Winner Takes It All." Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus composed the music, and the plot is based on a book by Catherine Johnson.
While this is a Greek-inspired tail, it certainly crosses language barriers: it has been performed in eleven languages: English, German, Norwegian, Japanese, Dutch, Korean, Spanish, Catalan, Swedish and Russian.
