To honor the memory of John Lennon and his love for New York City, the Beacon Theatre is hosting the 30th Annual John Lennon Tribute on Friday, Nov. 12. The concert will benefit the Playing For Change Foundation, which provides resources to musicians around the world.
Performers for the 30th annual tribute include Jackson Browne, Patti Smith, Cyndi Lauper, Aimee Mann, Keb' Mo', Joan Osborne, Martin Sexton, Shelby Lynne, Taj Mahal, Meshell Ndegeocello, Alejandro Escovedo, The Kennedys, Vusi Mahlasela, Rich Pagano of the Fab Faux, Chris Bliss, Wendy Osserman Dance and Joe Raiola.
Additionally, there will be a John Lennon 70th Birthday Celebration at the City Winery in New York on Saturday, Oct. 9.
The Annual John Lennon Tribute has been produced by the Theatre Within, a non-profit arts presenter, since 1981 the year after Lennon was murdered. Additionally, it is the longest running tribute event of its kind and the only John Lennon tribute that is supported by Lennon's wife, Yoko Ono.
The annual event has a tradition of raising money for charity. In 2008, Theater Within, Yoko Ono and the World Hunger year (WHY) launched a global campaign to fight hunger and poverty worldwide. In 2009, the event helped raise funds to benefit the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation.
In 2010, for the 30th annual John Lennon tribute, the concert was used as a benefit for the Playing For Change Foundation, which provides resources for musicians.
Each concert brings together numerous artists to cover famous John Lennon songs like "Imagine," "Strawberry Fields Forever," "Instant Karma (We All Shine On)" and "#9 Dream."
