The Nederlander Theatre in New York City will host the Broadway Revival "Guys and Dolls" this summer, marking the musical's third revival since its premiere in 1950. Acting heavy hitters are gracing the stage this time around, including Oliver Platt as Nathan Detroit, Laura Graham as Miss Adelaide, and Craig Bierko as Sky Masterson.
The musical, based on "The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown" by Damon Runyon, all begins with a bet. When quick-thinking wise guy Nathan Detroit bets playboy Sky Masterson that he can't woo missionary Sister Sarah Brown, hilarity ensues as we follow the quest of Masterson, the hesitance of Sister Sarah, and the squirming of Detroit from his fiancé, Miss Adelaide, to make an honest man out of him.
The tale is told on the vibrant backdrop of New York City, chocked full of gangsters, showgirls, gamblers and missionaries. Frank Loesser contributed the music and lyrics, which includes memorable numbers such as "Luck be a Lady," "A Bushel and a Peck," "If I Were a Bell," and "Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat."
In addition to its stints on Broadway, "Guys and Dolls" has had three runs on London's West End - over those performances, it picked up a Tony Award for Best Musical, Best Book and Best Revival, and an Olivier Award for Outstanding Musical in 1982 and 2005.
After commercial and critical success after its 1950 premiere, the musical was turned into a major motion picture in 1955, featuring Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra and Vivian Blaine - it has become an iconic film of that time.
