The national tour of "Grease," featuring American Idol winner Taylor Hicks as the Teen Angel, is currently heading across the country, with a number of short stops between now and June of next year, including longer stays at the Hobby Center in Houston, Texas, and the Boston Opera House in Boston, Mass.
In addition to Hicks, the cast for this tour includes Eric Schneider as Danny Emily Padgett as Sandy, Scot Allan as Eugene, Will Blum as Roger and Birdie Carroll as Jan.
While most people know Grease from the 1978 film, it has been an extremely successful play since long before John Travolta put on the T-Bird jacket. The play debuted in Broadway in 1972, and has had two revivals since. In 1973 it opened on the West End, and five revivals followed. There were also national tours of Poland, Warsaw, Puerto Rico and an Asian tour.
The play explores the themes of love, teen angst, and culture differences, set in the in the late '50s culture of drive ins, sock hops, and greasers. Along with the culture comes some of the best songs in theater - including "Summer Nights," "We Go Together," You're the One that I Want," "Grease Lightning," and "Hopelessly Devoted to You."
