The musical Godspell is playing at New York's Circle in the Square from October 2011 through the better part of 2012.
Godspell, which is an archaic spelling of gospel meaning "good word," was originally created as a Broadway musical in 1971 and has been revived several times since. The performance features around several parables in the Bible, including the parable of the Good Samaritan, the parable of Lazarus and the parable of the Prodigal Son.
The musical features well-known religious songs like "Day By Day," "Learn Your Lessons Well" and "Turn Back, O Man."
Godspell was created in 1970 as John-Michael Tebelek's master's thesis project at the Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Several of the original cast members were from CMU, as well as CMU alumnus Stephen Schawartz, who was hired to write the song score.
The first ever version lasted only 10 performances at the La Mama Experimental Theatre Club in New York. Afterward, it was brought to the attention of two producers who worked to open it off-Broadway. From 1971-1976, Godspell ran at the Promenade Theatre and then moved to Broadway. The Broadway run lasted through September 1977, totaling just over 2500 performances.
The 2011-2012 showing of Godspell is directed by Daniel Goldstein, produced by Ken Davenport and choreographed by Christopher Gattelli.
With only 10 actors on stage throughout the performance, they take it upon themselves to portray different people throughout the Bible, including Jesus. Through role-play, songs and scripture readings, Godspell is sure to educate while it entertains.
