God Of Carnage News and Information
Posted 6/18/2009
In 2009, God of Carnage won three Tony Awards, and is currently at the Bernard B. Jacob Theater in New York City for a total of 78 shows. The show was originally slated to end on July 19, but has been extended through November.
God of Carnage, which was originally titled "Le Dieu de Carnage," is a play by Yasmina Reza, first directed by Jürgen Gosch and performed first in Zürich in December 2006. It was first produced in English in London on March 2008 translated by Christopher Hampton.

The play begins with Ferdinand Reille and Bruno Vallon, both 11-years-old. They get in an argument because Bruno won't let Ferdinand in his gang. Ferdinand retaliates by knocking out two of Bruno's teeth with a stick.

That night the real arguments begin after the boys' parents sit down to discuss the matter like adults. Ferdinand's father is Alain, a lawyer glued to his cell phone, and his mother is Annette, who is involved in the "wealth management" of her husband's funds. Bruno's parents are Michel, is a self-made wholesaler with a sick mother and Véronique, an author who is working on a book about Darfur.

Though the evening begins civilly, it isn't long before the irrational arguments begin about racial prejudice, homophobia, and misogyny.
