A U.S. tour of "Fiddler on the Roof" will appear at a number of venues on the West and East Coasts between now and November of 2009. This tour features Chaim Topel as the lead role, and is billed as "Topel in 'Fiddler on the Roof' the Farewell Tour."
The musical, based upon the book "Tevye and his Daughters" by Sholem Aleichem, tells the tale of Tevye, a dairyman, his wife, Golde, and their five daughters dealing with religious life under Tsarist rule.
The original Broadway production opened in 1964, and was the first musical to perform more than 3,000 shows - it held the title of longest-running show until "Grease" took the throne. Today, it is Broadway's 13th longest-running show.
The musical has been nominated for ten Tony Awards, winning nine (including Best Musical), and has had four Broadway revivals, as well as a 1971 film.
"Fiddler on the Roof" features popular numbers such as, "If I Were a Rich Man," "To Life" and "The Leave Taking." With music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, they have created a poignant portrait of a family through music.
