Billy Elliot

News and Information
Billy Elliot, the 2000 film set in 'Everington' starring 11-year-old Billy, is coming to the August Wilson and Imperial Theatres in New York City, as well as the Victoria Palace Theatre in London, England!

Billy Elliot, his coal-mining father and brother, and his ballet teacher come together in this feel-good UK musical. The musical is set during the UK Miner's Strike (1884-85), and Billy's father and brother are home. His mother is no longer alive, though Billy's grandmother "nan" live with the family.

Billy's father takes him to boxing, though he finds that he doesn't like it. The one part he is interested in is the ballet class that's taking up part of the boxing gym. The ballet teacher secretly starts giving Billy ballet lessons, since he is forbidden to dance by his father.

Tony gets arrested and Billy is unable to attend the audition for the Royal Ballet School, which was a big opportunity for him. His ballet teacher then goes to his house and talks to his father, but his father and brother are outraged at the idea of Billy becoming a professional ballet dancer. Their minds are quickly changed once they see Billy dance, and sense his passion. His father takes him to audition for the ballet, and he is accepted. He then moves out of the house to attend the school.

The musical ends when Billy, now 25, is the star of Matthew Bourne's "Swan Lake."

The musical is based on the 2000 film Billy Elliot, and features music by Sir Elton John. The book and lyrics are by the film's screenplay writer Lee Hall, who was inspired in part by A. J. Cronin's novel, "The Stars Look Down."
Billy Elliott the musical has been nominated for nine Laurence Olivier Awards, and won four. In New York City, it won 10 Tony Awards and 10 Drama Desk Awards.
