Altar Boyz News and Information
Posted 6/18/2009
Altar Boyz, the Off-Broadway musical comedy about a Christian boy band from Ohio, is back for another set of shows at the New World Stages in New York and at the North Shore Music Theater in Boston.

The show begins with the Altar Boyz concert—the last one from their national "Raise the Praise" tour. Four of the group's five members— Matthew, Mark, Luke and Juan—are named after the authors of the four canonical Christian Gospels. The fifth member is Abraham, who is Jewish.

Throughout the play, the members of the group address the audience directly and refer to the place where the performance is taking place. The Altar Boyz perform songs complete with choreographed dance. By the end of the performance, the group presents several scenes depicting the group and its origins, as well as each member's personal strengths and that which haunts them.

Throughout the show, the Altar Boyz mention a machine on the stage called the Soul Sensor DX-12, which displays the number of burdened souls in the theatre. By the end, they hope to reduce the number to zero.

The show's music and lyrics were written by Gary Adler and Michael Patrick Walker. The book was written by Kevin Del Aguila based on an idea by Ken Davenport and Marc Kessler.
