A Little Night Music is coming to the Walter Kerr Theatre through January 2011. The musical was inspired by the 1955 Swedish comedy film "Smiles of a Summer Night," which involves a twisted series of lies and affairs all in the family.
Little Night Music originally debuted in 1973 and has been revived several times throughout the decades, including the 2009 Broadway revival at the Walter Kerr Theatre.
The play, which is set in Sweden around 1900, is centered around Fredrik Egerman, a middle-aged lawyer, and his 18-year-old wife Anne. Though they have been married eleven months, they have yet to consummate the marriage. Fredrik's son, Henrik, is one year older than his stepmother, and frustrated because no one listens to him.
Also on the scene is Petra, Anne's maid; Desiree Armfeldt, an actress and the former lover of Fredrik; Madame Armfeldt, Desiree's mother; Fredrika, Desiree's daughter.
When Desiree comes to town, a sexually-frustrated Fredrik sneaks off to see her, which upsets his young wife and Desiree's married lover, Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm.
The Count's wife, Charlotte, is also aware of the adultery, but has been so neglected by the Count that she feels there is no saving the marriage.
When the entire group gets together for a dinner party, will they decide to stay in their current relationship, or will they start something new? A surprise ending gives this production a shocking twist.
