42nd Street News and Information
Posted 6/18/2009
42nd Street, the 1980 Broadway production, is back for yet another year at the Westchester Broadway Theatre in Elmsford, N.Y.

In the past, 42nd Street won a Tony Award for Best Musical and an Olivier Award for Best Musical. In 2001, the Broadway revival also won the Tony for Best Revival. The musical is based on a novel by Bradford Ropes and the subsequent 1933 film adaptation.

It's 1933 and the newest show is "Pretty Lady." Peggy Sawyer, a beauty from Allentown, Pa., is scoped out by Billy Lawlor, who has been chosen for a minor lead. Billy tells Peggy she missed the auditions, and she leaves abruptly, slamming right into the director himself.

Dorothy Brock, a prima donna past her prime, is sure that she has landed the part, so when she's asked again to audition, she's upset. In the meantime, Anytime Annie, Phyllis and Lorraine invite Peggy to join them for lunch and some advice. At their encouragement, Peggy performs a dance routine that is witnessed by a love-struck Julian, the director, who decides to cast Peggy as a chorus girl.

After Dorothy's ankle is accidentally broken, by Peggy nonetheless, Peggy is offered the lead role, but she isn't interested. However, after some sweet-talking by Julian, Peggy changes her mind. There is little time, however, as only two days remain before opening night.

Next Peggy has to deal with Dorothy and Julian. Will Dorothy help her or hurt her? Will sparks fly when Julian finally works up the nerve to kiss Peggy? And, most importantly, can she pull the show off?
