Atlanta Thrashers 2010-11 Season Preview
Posted 9/29/2010
The Atlanta Thrashers finished just above the .500 mark last season, but it still wasn't enough for them to reach the Eastern Conference postseason, ultimately finishing in tenth place.
It was a troublesome offseason for the Thrashers, all because of one man. Ilya Kovalchuk decided he was going to leave Atlanta and test the free agent market, so the team traded him to the New Jersey Devils. Now the team is devoid of a franchise player.
The team then saw a transition at general manager as Tom Waddell stepped aside to give the job to Rick Dudley. He then quickly fired head coach John Anderson, and Craig Ramsey was hired.
If it seems like the Thrashers are in a state of madness and transition, I think you see the big picture.
That said, it's not a complete disaster for Atlanta, who spent the offseason taking advantage of all the players that the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks had to let go because of expected salary increases.
Atlanta already has some young talent and now has a core of established players after they poached Chicago's roster. They certainly aren't a lock for the playoffs, but they should battle with a bunch of other Southeastern Division teams for one of the final postseason spots in the conference.
