The Washington Capitals didn't even reach the playoffs last year, a shocking development given that they had been consistently one of the better teams in the Eastern Conference for close to a decade.

The Capitals hope that they can bounce back this year, but it remains to be seen. Alex Ovechkin actually played at a very high level last year, yet the Capitals still couldn't get into the postseason.

New head coach Barry Trotz replaces Adam Oates, whose short tenure came to an end when he was fired alongside general manager George McPhee, a longtime mainstay in the Capitals front office.

It's clear that the Capitals are in somewhat of a transition in terms of their identity and what kind of team they want to be. The high-powered, high-scoring philosophy didn't pay off, so the team would like to focus more on the defensive end.

It will be an interesting season to follow the Capitals, as it's hard to know what to expect from this group. There is still plenty of talent, but you wonder if a bit of a transition in philosophies might mean there is a period of adjustment for at least part of the season.

The Washington Capitals play all their home games at Verizon Center in Washington, DC
