Toronto Maple Leafs 2010-11 Mid-Season Review
Posted 1/31/2011
The Toronto Maple Leafs, despite sitting in fourth place in the Northeast Division, have shown some signs of improvement after what was a very ugly 2009-2010 season.
Head coach Ron Wilson has bounced around the NHL with marginal success, but maybe he is the guy who can get the Maple Leafs turned around.
You certainly can't argue with the goaltenders on the roster, but surprisingly it hasn't been all positive. Jonas Gustavsson has actually struggled mightily this year, allowing almost 3.3 goals per game and stopping less than 90 percent of the shots he has faced.
Jean-Sebastien Giguere, who had some tremendous seasons with the Anaheim Ducks but has since pretty much fallen off the map, has been much better than Gustavsson this year. He is allowing just 2.71 goals per game, which is still not great, and is stopping about 90 percent of the shots coming his way.
The team might actually want to look into giving James Reimer more time in net. He is 4-2 in his six starts and allowing less than 2.3 goals per game. He is also saving 90 percent of the shots he has faced.
Toronto is likely too far back to make a legitimate run at either the division title or the postseason, but if they get really hot for a significant period of time, you never know.
