San Jose Sharks 2010 Playoffs Preview
For the second year in a row, the San Jose Sharks come into the 2010 NHL playoffs as the team to beat in the Western Conference.
Last year ended in disaster for the Sharks, who were upset in the first round of the playoffs. They will be looking for a much longer stay this time around, but it remains to be seen whether they have the intangibles it takes to make a deep postseason run.
The Sharks have a nice offensive attack that features leading goal scorer Patrick Marleau and top assist man Joe Thornton.
San Jose's goaltending has been an issue at times with Evgeni Nabokov, but you also have to take into account that he plays in the more wide open Western Conference.
The Sharks have also been known to fall behind on the road and just throw in the towel, something that has concerned their head coach all year long. It's reasons like this that the Sharks were bounced out of the playoffs in the first round last year.
A mentally weak team is not going to make it far in any postseason, especially when it comes to the NHL. You can't afford to just give up when the going gets tough. It also doesn't help that the team has floundered down the stretch and looked simply disinterested at times. Maybe they are just tired of waiting for the playoffs to start.
It will certainly be interesting to see if the Sharks can toughen up and make use of their home ice advantage throughout the Western Conference playoffs.
