Phoenix Coyotes 2010-11 Season Preview
Posted 9/28/2010
The Phoenix Coyotes surprised many last season by finishing fourth in the Western Conference and pushing the heavily favored Detroit Red Wings to Game 7 in the first round of the playoffs before bowing out.
It was their first playoff season in eight years, giving fans of the franchise hopes that there is more excitement to come. The recent controvery surrounding the sale and maybe even relocation of the team had put fans on edge.
The team picked up Eric Belanger and Ray Whitney in the offseason, giving them two top scorers for an offense that finished near the bottom in scoring last season. That said, the cash-strapped Coyotes didn't have the money to go out and make all the necessary offseason additions to take the next step.
Ilya Bryzgalov was acquired by the Coyotes from the Anaheim Ducks via the waiver wire and was a huge reason for the team's turn around last year. He ended up being a finalist for the Vezina Trophy.
The ability to score goals remains a concern, but Belanger and Whitney should at least bump Phoenix into the top 20 in scoring this year.
Still, it's hard to see this team matching last year's point total unless everything breaks right again.
The team will also have the challenge of trying to ignore all of the off-the-ice distractions that comes with uncertain ownership and a future that very well could still mean relocation to another city.
