The Ottawa Senators are hanging tough in the Northeast Division, sitting in second place behind the defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins.

At a closer glance, Ottawa is one of the more interesting teams from the first half of the season. They played almost as well on the road as they did at home, and despite their solid footing in the division, they actually have a negative goal differential for the season.

Goal differential is a great way to tell what teams are generally playing the best hockey, and the minus three has to be alarming for the Senators and their fans. The good news is that, other than the Bruins, the Senators aren't facing any other stiff competition within their own division.

The Senators feature a lot of offensive firepower, but their goaltending and defense leave a lot to be desired. That's another huge red flag, and even if Ottawa is able to sneak into the playoff, one would think it will be a short stay if they can't keep the puck out of their own net.
