Florida Panthers 2011-12 Mid-Season Review
Posted 2/6/2012
The Florida Panthers have stunned the entire NHL community by sitting in first place in the Southeast Division at the All-Star break, barely holding off the Washington Capitals.

Coming into the season, everyone once again felt this was the Capitals' division and all of the other teams were just playing in it, but that hasn't been the case so far. The Panthers have done a great job taking advantage of Washington's roller-coaster season thus far, but it remains to be seen whether they can keep it up in the second half.

They play in the only division in the NHL where every single team has a negative goal differential on the season, which just goes to show you how much parity there really is in the group. Nonetheless, the team that wins the division is guaranteed a top three seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs, making it important to come out on top.

Florida has been very good at home and solid on the road, and they will need to keep that up to have any chance of maintaining their division lead. While the Capitals have been a model of inconsistency, they have a ton of talent and should eventually right the ship. Florida may sneak into the playoffs, but it's very hard to see them holding off Alex Ovechkin and the Caps.
