2009 Edmonton Oilers Season Update
Posted 3/1/2009

The Edmondton Oilers have a winning record yet somehow find themselves just a few games out of last place in the Northwest Division.

The good news is that the Oilers are tied for third place and find themselves just three points out of second place.

Ales Hemsky is the offense for the Oilers. He leads the club in points, goals scored and assists with 51, 19, and 32 respectively.

While it's great that Hemsky is such a fantastic player, the face he is leading Edmonton is every major offensive category and that some of his totals really aren't that high is a huge concern.

In fact, Edmonton is one of the lowest-scoring teams in the entire league, which is a really bad sign considering the highest-scoring clubs are located in the Western Conference.

Injuries are part of the problem, as the Oilers are missing two of their top offensive players in Lubomir Visnovsky and Denis Grebeshkov.

A lack of goal scoring has become a real issue of late, and Edmonton has dropped from sixth to ninth place in the conference, which would keep them out of the playoffs if they were to start today.

Since the start of the new year, Edmonton is 10-1 when they score three or more goals but just 2-10 when they score 2 or less. They simply don't have the defense to make up for such a struggling offense.

Dwayne Roloson has been solid but not spectacular in goal, sporting a 2.74 goals against average and stopping over 91 percent of the shots he has faced. His two backups both give up an average of well over three goals per game.

Making the playoffs is going to be tough now unless the Oilers find a way to start putting the puck in the back of the net on a more regular basis.
