Colorado Avalanche 2011-12 Mid-Season Review
The Colorado Avalanche have played above .500 at home and on the road this season but only find themselves in third place in the Northwest Division.
The good news is that Colorado is right in the thick of things when it comes to competing for a playoff spot. While they sit in the middle of the pack in scoring, the Avalanche need to get it together defensively. They are giving up way too many goals, and that will come back to haunt them.
The team has been much better in games started by goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere as opposed to Semyon Varlamov, who is considered the future in net. I would expect Giguere to get the majority of the starts in the second half of the season so long as he can stay healthy and effective.
Colorado is part of a big pack of teams fighting for only a few playoff spots. While the Avalanche certainly have a chance to get into the postseason, I think they are going to have a tough time when going up against more talented teams. Expect the Avalanche to come up just a bit short in their postseason bid.
