2009 Chicago Blackhawks Season Update
Posted 3/1/2009
The Chicago Blackhawks are giving those die-hard fans in the Windy City something to cheer about this year.

Chicago is currently in second place in the Central Division, trailing only the Detroit Red Wings.

The fans have done their job when the Blackhawks are at home, making it their favorite place to play. In fact, every home game this year has been sold out by the Blackhawks, which is really impressive given the current struggles of the economy.

The team is 15-5-5 at the United Center, which is one of the best home records in the entire league.

Center Patrick Kane leads the club with 53 points and a team-high 34 assists. Kane also leads the club with 10 power play goals. Patrick Sharp leads the club with 21 goals despite the fact he is currently on injured reserve.

Cristobal Huet has picked up where he left off from last year when his hot goaltending helped the surging Washington Capitals make up a ton of ground in their division race to reach the postseason.

Huet is allowing just 2.23 goals per game with a save percentage above 91 while splitting time with backup Nikolai Khabibulin.

Khabibulin has been sharp as well, sporting a 2.37 goals against average while saving more than 92 percent of the shots he has faced.

The fact that both goaltenders have been so effective has worked well in that neither has played in a tremendous amount of games. Keeping both goalies fresh for the playoffs could really be a huge advantage for Chicago.

The Blackhawks are unlikely to catch the explosive Red Wings for the division title, but they are certainly in a position to make a lot of noise once they reach the postseason.
