Buffalo Sabres 2010-11 Mid-Season Review
Posted 1/31/2011
The Buffalo Sabres have been somewhat of a disappointment this season as they sit in third place in the Northeast Division, but they are still within striking distance of the top two teams.
As goaltender Ryan Miller goes, so go the Sabres. The problem is that Miller hasn't been nearly as good this year as he usually is. He is allowing almost 2.7 goals per game and stopping just 91 percent of the shots he has faced.
While his play might have dropped off a little bit, the defense in front of him deserves a lot of the blame. Miller is being challenged with some very difficult shots to stop because the guys in front him aren't doing their job.
At the same time, it's hard to give Miller too many nights off when you look at the guys who are backing him up. The two other goaltenders are allowing almost three goals per game and barely stopping 90 percent of the shots coming their way.
The Sabres have been a hard team to figure out. At times, players have questioned whether the team really knows how to win games and if they are always working as hard as they possibly can to continue to improve.
Because they have Miller in net, you can't write off the Sabres and their chance at winning the division title. It seems unlikely, but if Miller gets in a zone, it's nearly impossible to get the puck past him. That said, they need to pick it up in a hurry with two talented teams to pass.
