Frozen Four 2010 Preview
Posted 1/14/2010
While basketball and football reign supreme in college athletics, hockey is a lesser known sport that is really popular among the northern half of the country.
While college football has the pagentry of bowl games and basketball has their March Madness, hockey has the Frozen Four.
The 2009 Frozen Four garnered more attention than usual because it was played in our nation's capital at the Verizon Center.
The event is typically played in a city further north in the NCAA hockey hotbed, but the move to the Middle-Atlantic region allowed the sport to reach an audience that might not normally attend a college game.
It also came at the perfect time for Washington, D.C., which has seen an expotential growth in hockey popularity thanks to the success of the Capitals and the emergence of NHL star Alex Ovechkin.
After having so much success last year, the NCAA is going bigger and better in 2010, hosting the Frozen Four at Ford Field from April 8-10.
The home of the Detroit Lions is a sleek, modern building that can accomodate a much larger crowd.
Detroit has hosted five previous Frozen Four's, but has not had the chance to do so since 1990, when it was held at the Joe Louis Arena.
Meanwhile, four different sites will host the regional games, and the bidding process for that has become more competitive with each passing year.
There is little doubt that the NCAA hockey tournament is quickly gaining popularity, so don't miss out on your chance to catch the sport's biggest collegiate event of the season.
