2008 Final Four Preview

With the ACC schedule winding down, that means the ACC tournament must be just around the corner.
The tournament this year promises to be one of the most exciting in recent memory given the competitiveness of the conference. It has the most tradition of any in the country and is widely regarded as the best there is.
North Carolina, Duke and Wake Forest all have national championship aspirations while Clemson and Florida State have proven to be quite formidable as well. Throw in other tough teams like Miami and Virginia Tech and you have a fantastic tournament shaping up.
The Tar Heels are the defending champions and will be tough to knock off, but they have proven to be vulnerable in the regular season. Still, the Tar Heels have that dangerous inside-outside game with Tyler Hansbrough and all of their three-point shooters.
Duke has improved from last year and looks to be a serious contender. They have a tremendous game on the outside with their three-point shooting and ability to penetrate to the basket.
Wake Forest emerged on the scene late last year as a team to watch this season and they have still managed to exceed all expectations. This young team could get rattled in the spotlight of the nation's best conference tournament, but don't bet on it.
When it comes to the ACC tournament, there always seems to be that team that comes out of nowhere to become a major factor and sometimes even reach the championship game.
Clemson is that darkhorse team that nobody wants to play. Some nights they look like one of the top teams in the country, as evidenced by their destruction of Duke. Other nights they don't even look like an NCAA tournament team, such as when they blew a 17-point lead at home to Florida State.
Speaking of the Seminoles, it appears they are heading to their first NCAA tournament in many years and are another darkhorse to watch in the conference tourney. They have played all the top teams in the conference extremely tough, so keep an eye on Florida State.
Miami and Virginia Tech have both been incredibly inconsistent, but they have proven they can beat just about anyone when they are on. Don't sleep on Maryland either, a scrappy bunch of players with a hard-nosed coach. They might not be able to win the tournament, but they sure can make some noise.
