Utah Jazz 2008/2009 Season Preview
Posted 8/15/2008
The Utah Jazz had a solid 2007-2008 season that saw them reach the playoffs and advance to the second round, pushing the Western Conference champion Los Angeles Lakers before coming up a little bit short.

Utah is a very balanced team that can score a lot of points but also plays solid defense too, a rare combination in the Western Conference.

The team saw significant improvement in the second half of last season after making a trade with the Philadelphia 76ers for shooting guard Kyle Korver. Utah went on a tear after acquiring him, as his outside shooting opened things up for his teammates and gave the team an asset it was missing.

The Jazz selected center Kosta Koufos in the first round of the NBA Draft. Had Koufos stayed in college for another season, he would have been a lottery pick, meaning Utah got an excellent value here. The hope is that Koufos develops enough in the next few seasons to become the team's starting center.

Center Carlos Boozer had another fantastic season and is proving himself to be an All-Star caliber player despite being a little bit undersized at the position. He is usually good for about 21 points and 10 rebounds a night.

Point guard Deron Williams has established himself as one of the best at his position in the entire league. His matchups with Chris Paul are often considered a battle between the best two young point guards in the NBA.

Williams continues to get better, and a trip to the Olympics this summer to represent the United States and try to bring the gold medal back home will only help him further develop his game.

It will be interesting to see what the team decides to do with forward Andrei Kirilenko. He is supremely talented, but complained a lot last year about his role on the team and wanted to be traded. The Jazz have definitely put him on the trade block and explored potential deals, but they haven't found one to their liking yet.

Utah should once again challenge for a division title and a spot in the Western Conference elite, but the competition will be stiff.
