If you took three of the most awesome rock bands of all time, and brought together their drummer, bass player and lead guitarist to form new band, you would have something extraordinary. Dave Grohl (Nirvana, FooFighters), John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) and Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) have done just that when they formed Them Crooked Vultures in 2009. So far they have been delivering more than imagined. They will be coming back to the US after touring Europe in mid-April to play shows in California, Las Vegas and Denver.
Grohl's idea for the band started in 2005. He told interviewers of 'Mojo' magazine, "The next project that I'm trying to initiate involves me on drums, Josh Homme on guitar and John Paul Jones on bass. That's the next album. That won't suck."
Not only does TCV "not suck," but also the chemistry is so 'right' between these three that new releases are being made every other moment. For a band that only started to record together in July of last year, their first live show in Chicago on August 9th of last year included an 80-minute set of all original material in which they debuted the songs "Elephants," "Scumbag Blues," "Caligulove" and "Nobody Loves Me and Neither Do I."
By October they had started their 'Deserve a Future' tours in North America and in the UK. The UK leg of the tour sold out in 12 minutes.
Their first single, "New Fang," was announced on the radio on October 26th and was followed by their self-titled debut album, which made it to #12 on the Billboard charts. The band also offered their single "Mind Eraser (No Chaser)" to fans as a free download on iTunes, and on November 9th they streamed their full album on their website.
In a recent interview Grohl said they are already working on their second studio album with a release likely by the end of 2010. Stay tuned!
