San Antonio Spurs 2009 Season Update
Posted 12/29/2009
The San Antonio Spurs have gotten off to a very sluggish start and sit in third place in the Southwest Division.

The Spurs seem to be the classic case of a team that had a core group of players who are now starting show their age and their wear and tear rather quickly.

Of course, some will continue to argue that the Spurs often sleepwalk through the first part of the season only to heat up during the second half en route to a run through the playoffs. We've definitely seen that song and dance before, and it's very possible we will be talking about how great the Spurs are later this year.

Everyone keeps waiting for 'The Big Fundamental' ,Tim Duncan, to slow down, and maybe he has a little bit. Still, he leads the Spurs in scoring and rebounding, averaging a solid double-double per game.

Point guard Tony Parker is second on the team in scoring and leads the club in assists. Still, his numbers are significantly down from a year ago and he has to be a bigger part of the offense. Ditto for Manu Ginobili, who still doesn't seem to be recovered from that significant ankle injury.

The Spurs also lack depth, which isn't good considering how many miles are on the knees and ankles of the team's three big stars. They need players to come off the bench and give them a rest, probably a longer one than in past seasons.

Richard Jefferson was a solid pickup but cannot be counted upon for the same production as we saw from him several years ago. Veteran Michael Finley has fallen off the map and barely sees any paying time.

Roger Mason has been a big disappointing this year after having such an impact last season. It's never good when Matt Bonner is arguably your most effective reserve. He is more like your 10th man, not your sixth.

Rookie Dajuan Blair has been one of the few bright spots off the bench, but he isn't ready to be one of the team's impact players just yet.

The Spurs are still the Spurs, so they can never be counted out. When it comes playoff time, they will be ready to go. If you're a San Antonio fan, you just have to hope that all of the key players are healthy and well-rested going into the postseason.
