Phoenix Suns 2011-12 Season Preview
Posted 12/21/2011
The Phoenix Suns came on strong at the end of last year, and the team is hopeful that a trip to the playoffs is part of the plan for the 2011-2012 season.
Rumors about trading point guard Steve Nash have floated around since last season, but the Suns seem intent on holding on to their playmaker. While his defense remains a huge liability, Nash is still one of the best point guards in the entire league and makes everyone around him better.
The Suns re-signed Grant Hill in the offseason, giving him a one-year contract. While Hill's skills are not what they once were, he is still a very solid player who keeps himself in terrific shape and is a great locker room presence.
It's clear that this time is in a transition phase. Long gone are the days when Phoenix was considered a legitimate NBA title contender. But Nash keeps fans in the seats and provides a veteran presence, along with Hill, for the younger players. The Suns need to give him guys to mentor and build up with the team.
Phoenix might actually take a step back this year rather than forward, and that won't help attendance numbers. Nash and Hill are both a year older, and while they both stay in phenomenal shape, a slight drop-off in production is going to occur at some point in time.
