Orlando Magic 2010 Playoffs Preview
Posted 4/15/2010
The Orlando Magic made an unlikely trip to the NBA Finals last year, but it will be much more difficult for them to slide under the radar this season.

Orlando finished with not only the second-best record in the Eastern Conference but the entire NBA.

The Magic made very few changes in the offseason from last year's team, but they did lose forward Hedo Turgolu and replace him with Vince Carter.

Carter has given the Magic some added athleticism and explosiveness to replace the versatile Turgolu. When he feels like playing hard, he remains one of the most talented players in the Eastern Conference.

The team is built around center Dwight Howard, who dominates the low post on both ends of the floor but still hasn't quite blossomed into a big-time scorer. Either way, the Cavaliers really don't have anyone that can match up with Howard.

It also helps that the Magic have point guard Jameer Nelson back and healthy after he missed much of last postseason with an injury. He can knock down the outside shot and is willing to defer to teammates and get them involved in the offense.

Then there is Rashard Lewis, who does an excellent job in a complimentary role of spotting up behind the three-point line and knocking down big shots.

The bench has a number of quality role players who come in and do a nice job of maintaining the lead. Matt Barnes has emerged as a defender that can guard the other team's best player. J.J. Redick is much improved and has added quickness to get to the basket in addition to his lethal outside shot.

It's questionable whether Orlando has a better team than last season, but there is no denying that they have another chance at a deep postseason run. The Magic certainly has the talent to get past the Cavaliers again, but they will have to be playing at the top of their game to do so.

If Howard wants to truly become one of the game's elite players, stepping up and becoming a one-man wrecking crew in the playoffs is the way to reach that level.
