Orlando Magic 2009 Season Update
Posted 12/29/2009
The Orlando Magic hold a narrow lead over the Atlanta Hawks for first place in the Southeast Division.

They are also right in the thick of things when it comes to the Eastern Conference playoff race and trying get the top seed and homecourt advantage throughout the playoffs.

The team weathered the storm for the first 10 games when they had to play without shooting guard Rashard Lewis, who was suspended by the league for violating the performance-enhancing drugs policy.

They have had to deal with the periodic absence of point guard Jameer Nelson because of another injury, yet still haven't missed a beat.
Veteran Jason Williams, signed earlier in the year, has jump-started his career and played very well filling in for Nelson.

The Magic has also easily overcome the loss of Hedo Turgolu, who became a free agent after the season and signed a big deal with the Toronto Raptors. He was invaluable to the Magic, and many believed they would struggle without him.

To make up for the loss of Turgolu, the Magic acquired shooting guard Vince Carter. The ultra-talented veteran has always been hard to figure out. One minute he seems focused and plays terrific, the next he seems like he couldn't care less.

The Magic have been fortunate enough to get the good Carter, who is leading the team by scoring more than 18 points per game. Maybe he realized that his career is winding down and this might be his best shot at an NBA title.

Dwight Howard is a beast in the low post as usual, averaging a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds per game. Howard could still use some help developing his offensive game, but is still one of the stars in the conference.

The Magic also features a deep bench, which always comes in handy during a long, grueling NBA season. Players like Mickael Pietrus, Brandon Bass, Matt Barnes and Ryan Anderson are all solid contributors.

Orlando is certainly one of the most talented and balanced teams in the Eastern Conference, and it wouldn't be surprising if they crashed the NBA Finals for a second straight season.
