New York Knicks 2008/2009 Season Preview
Posted 8/15/2008
If there was one word to describe the 2007-2008 season for the New York Knicks, it would be the same one used to describe the past several years: awful.

However, there is hope Knicks fans. After all of those years of suffering under head coach Isiah Thomas, management finally decided to can him.

The even better news is that the Knicks were able to lure Mike D' Antoni away from the Phoenix Suns to become their next head coach. D' Antoni was clearly frustrated by the lack of appreciation shown by Suns management for all he did with the franchise and decided to head East and take the biggest offer.

While Thomas is finally gone, the train wreck of a team he constructed as the general manager and coached is still together, if you can say that about this collection of players.

It will take several years to undo the mess Thomas left behind, but at least the process is already underway.

The team signed Chicago Bulls point guard Chris Duhon and will likely allow him to compete for the starting job with Stephon Marbury. Duhon isn't nearly as talented as Marbury but has shown great improvement since entering the league and is a smart player who works hard on both ends of the floor.

If the Knicks have their way, they will trade away Marbury for nearly anything, as he has become a major distraction and a cancer inside the locker room. The Knicks also might attempt to trade forward Zach Randolph as well, who also has a reputation for not being a great team-player. Forward Eddy Curry also fits that mold, and it is unlikely his out-of-shape body will fit in well with D' Antoni's running style.

The team selected forward Danilo Gallinari as their lottery pick in the NBA Draft, and he should be an immediate contributor. There are few things he doesn't do well, and D' Antoni will appreciate his outside shooting.

D' Antoni will have some pieces to work with, especially considering he likes athletic players who can play an up-tempo style. Guards Quentin Richardson and Nate Robinson should both be perfect fits for his system, and Fred Jones could really bloom under the new head coach.

David Lee and Jared Jeffries are two underappreciated forward who do a lot of the little things to help teams win games and should continue to develop into even bigger contributors.

The Knicks will be terrible yet again in 2008-2009, but expect to see some improvement thanks to the major upgrade in coaches. Knicks fans have something to be excited about again, which is really all you could ask for in the first year post-Thomas.
