The New York Knicks hired Phil Jackson in the offseason to oversee basketball operations, and he accomplished his first major goal by eventually getting star Carmelo Anthony to spurn better teams and re-sign with the storied franchise.
It seemed as though Carmelo might be trying to team up with LeBron James, but that didn't go according to plan. There were also some better landing spots, with one being Chicago, but he opted to stay put and take the money.
Jackson didn't take long getting to work, trading away both Tyson Chandler and Raymond Felton, later saying that he thought the team was in need of some changes to improve chemistry.
The team still hasn't found a taker for Amar'e Stoudemire, but you can be assured that they can't wait to get his big contract off the books. The decision to bring in Jose Calderon to be the starting point guard was a smart, under-the-radar type move.
This isn't going to be an easy fix, but with Jackson at the controls, there is at least some sense of optimism surrounding the Knicks for the first time in a long time. The Knicks should make the playoffs in the weak Eastern Conference, but it will be another year or two before they could have any chance of being a real contender.
