New Orleans Hornets 2008/2009 Season Preview
Posted 8/15/2008
When you talk about taking a major step forward, the New Orleans Hornets did that and then some in the 2007-2008 season.

Led by point guard Chris Paul, the Hornets surprised everyone by finishing the season with the second best record in the Western Conference and advancing to the second round of the playoffs.

The Hornets pushed the defending champion San Antonio Spurs all the way to Game 7 before bowing out of the playoffs.

With some valuable playoff experience under their belt, the Hornets are primed to be a true contender for the NBA title in 2008-2009.

Paul dazzled the league all season long, showing an uncanny ability to penetrate into the lane and finish or pass the ball off to an open teammate. He was also very good defensively and finished as the runner-up in the MVP voting. He can really do it all.

The one area in which Paul does need to improve is his outside shooting to keep teams a little more honest and open things up for his teammates. He isn't a fantastic outside shooter, which allows teams to sag a little bit defensively.

Forward David West is probably the most underrated player in the NBA. If you want production, look no further than the steady West. He doesn't receive any of the accolades, but the guy averages nearly a double-double per game. He is certainly a player a lot of opposing teams covet.

The Hornets selected Darrell Arthur in the NBA Draft but then traded him away, electing to save the money for a possible future free agent signing in a particular area of need.

Fans may been a little unsure of the move at the time, but the extra money allowed the Hornets to outbid everyone for Boston Celtics forward James Posey, who was key reserve in their run to an NBA title.

They probably overpaid for Boston's top player off the bench, but his outside shooting and defensive ability will certainly be an asset against the Western Conference powers.

New Orleans didn't really do much in the offseason to upgrade their roster, but the current team is still plenty talented. They should be right in the thick of it in the Western Conference and make a run at the NBA title.
