Milwaukee Bucks 2008/2009 Season Preview
Posted 8/15/2008
The Milwaukee Bucks had yet another disappointing season, failing to make the playoffs and causing some changes in front office personnel.
This just seems like a team stuck in neutral with no real way of getting any better.
The Bucks inexplicably signed center Andrew Bogut to a handsome contract extension in the offseason when he doesn't become a free agent for several more seasons. Overpaying players for no real reason certainly isn't going to help turn the franchise around.
One big move the team made in the offseason was to trade Yi Juilian, their first round pick from last year, to the New Jersey Nets for swingman Richard Jefferson. I know Juilian wasn't thrilled playing in the middle of nowhere, but talk about a trade that makes absolutely zero sense.
Even with the Jefferson acquisition, shooting guard Michael Redd remains the star of the team. Unfortunately for the Bucks, their star has missed significant time each of the past two seasons because of the same chronic back injury.
With the No. 8 overall pick in the NBA Draft, the Bucks selected rising forward Joe Alexander. I really liked the pick because I love his athletic ability and the way he can play in the post or face up to the basket.
However, Alexander was reportedly completely lost during the summer league, which is slightly concerning. Still, I don't put too much stock into what players do over the course of a few games in the summer. I still think Alexander has worlds of potential and will become an impact player in a couple of years.
While I do like the Alexander selection, the Bucks are compiling way too many of the same type of player. It seems like they have a serious logjam of swingmen on their roster and I'm not exactly sure what they are looking to accomplish with that. Maybe they will try to swing a trade with a couple of them, but it certainly is confusing.
Milwaukee has done literally nothing to improve in the offseason, although I guess Jefferson is a slight upgrade over Juilian for the next season or two. This team will not come even close to making the playoffs this year, and outside of drafting Alexander, they haven't improved the future outlook of the franchise either.
