The Memphis Grizzlies are sitting in last place in the Northwest Division, which is what everyone pretty much expected from them before the start of the season.

However, the surprise is that they are hovering near the .500 mark and that their spot in the basement has more to do with the competitiveness of the division than their poor play.

The Grizzlies are still very much a team in the midst of a rebuilding process, and that plan has been further hampered by the poor economy for an organization that is cash strapped.

Nonetheless, this group is holding their own. Forward Rudy Gay continues to improve and is averaging more than 20 points per game to lead the Grizzlies in scoring.

The bad news is that many believe Gay could be one of the players moving before the NBA trade deadline in a move that should help a contender and also aid the financial situation of the Grizzlies.

Forward Zach Randolph isn't exactly a model citizen these days, but he is managing to behave himself and stay out of all of the trouble that saw him leave Portland and New York on bad terms. He is averaging a double-double, with more than 19 points and 11 rebounds per game.

The team signed point guard Allen Iverson in the offseason, hoping the veteran's presence might help some of the younger players while also boosting ticket sales.

Instead, Iverson became frustrated with his role of coming off of the bench on such a lousy team and simply picked up and left. He announced his retirement, only to reverse his decision and later sign with the Philadelphia 76ers. I guess you could say that the organization was so lousy that he opted to retire than keep playing, but Memphis has been respectable this year.

Iverson has been a terrific teammate throughout his career and lays it all out on the court, but it was probably a little naive to think he was going to come into a losing organization in the twilight of his career and spend his time mentoring the younger players while sitting on the pine.

O.J. Mayo and Marc Gasol are two up-and-coming players who Grizzlies fans have to hope will remain with the team. Any talented player on the team who could start to make some serious coin is always a trade possibility.

Point guard Mike Conley remains a disappointment for Memphis much the same way former college teammate Greg Oden has struggled in Portland.
Conley is averaging just 10 points and five assists per game and might never become the point guard the Grizzlies had envisioned that they drafted.

Memphis remains in the playoff picture, but don't be fooled, this team is not going to the postseason. If Memphis can manage to finish the season within 10 games of the .500 mark, that has to be considered a huge success.

Grizzlies hope to overcome geography on playoff journey
Posted February 17, 2010 by bud

Oh, were it not for the geographically challenged NBA, the Memphis Grizzlies could start printing playoff tickets.
OK, that may be overstating things just a bit. Still Memphis, nestled on the banks of the Mississippi River, plays in the Western Conference. And in the wild wild West, the Grizzlies? 26-25 record is good for 11th in the standings, a full three games out of the conference?s final playoff spot (currently occupied by Portland).
Were Memphis in the East ? NBA speaking, of course ? the Grizzlies would stand tied for sixth with Charlotte. Still, with some good ball in its final 31 games, Memphis can challenge for a playoff berth in the West. But the Grizzlies lost six of 10 coming into the All-Star break, and needs to find its stride as the season picks back up this week.
Memphis returns to action Wednesday at Toronto, which sits fifth in the East but has a record only 2 ? games better than the Grizzlies. Friday, Memphis plays host to Miami, and travels to New Jersey on Sunday to meet the 4-48 Nets.

Grizz's Surprise Playoff Run Hits Cavs Speedbump
Posted February 3, 2010 by bryan
Leave it to LeBron James to derail the plans of any other potential contender.

With the Memphis Grizzlies having come on extremely hot as of December, the Grizz have an All-Star in Zach Randolph and are thinking playoffs in the first time in years. For a franchise that drafted No.2 overall this past June, the turnaround has been dramatic, to say the least.

Unfortunately for the Grizz, they ran into a motivated Cavaliers team in Cleveland on Tuesday night...and that usually doesn't end well for the Cavs' opponent. This night was no different, as the Cavs won 105-89 thanks to inspired play from LeBron James and Shaquille O'Neal.

James posted 22 points, six rebounds, and 15 assists, while Shaq went 13/13 with four blocks in 21 minutes.

Regarding James, Memphis coach Lionel Hollins only had words of praise.

"He sees things other players don't see," Hollins said. "He attacks the basket and throws it out for a 3. He attacks the basket, then throws it for a layup. He gets the ball on one side, he's not looking, but he sees the guy and whips it all the way across the court for another 3-pointer.

"He's just a great player. I don't know much more that you can say about him," he said.

Off-nights from Zach Randolph (eight points on 3-of-14 shooting) and O.J. Mayo (10 points on 4-of-15 shooting) doomed the Grizzlies, as the Cavs' tenacious D pressured them into low-percentage shots all night long.

Memphis has a chance to turn it around Friday night at home against Houston.
Iverson leaves reeling Grizzlies
Posted November 9, 2009 by bud

The Allen Iverson experience in Memphis looks like it's over before it really began.
The controversial guard has left the Grizzlies, asking for and receiving permission to depart this weekend. It's unclear whether the former All-Star guard will return to the team, who signed Iverson in the offseason and has been bringing him off the bench.
The 14-year veteran has averaged 22 minutes per game, a big change for a player accustomed to playing 35-40 minutes a night for more than a decade. He missed time early in the season with a hamstring injury.
Iverson, who is averaging 12.3 points per game, has said publicly how difficult it's been to make the transition from starter to role player.
It's another thing gone awry for a Memphis team that's dropped five games in a row. The Grizzles already find themselves 3 1/2 games behind Houston and?Dallas in the Southwest Division and riding a five-game losing streak.
Iverson or not, the Grizzlies look to get back on the winning track when they play host to Portland on Tuesday.
