Los Angeles Lakers 2009 Season Update
Posted 12/29/2009
The Los Angeles Lakers are well on their way to defending their NBA title after opening up the season right where they left off last year.

The Lakers, after getting off to a sluggish start, are now sitting at the top with the best record in the NBA.

Kobe Bryant is still playing at a very high level and remains one of the best players in the NBA. He has had to fight through a broken finger for a good portion of the season, and said it is the most difficult injury he has ever had to deal with.

He has still managed to average nearly 29 points per game and also leads the team in assists. It's amazing how much he has transformed himself from a selfish to selfless player.

His teammates used to look at him in a negative light as a selfish player who only care about himself, but now they seem to at least pretend to like him.

Center Pau Gasol is averaging a double-double per game and teaming up with Andrew Bynum to create one of the most dominating and intimidating low post tandems in the league.

The biggest question surrounding the Lakers is the play at point guard, which is split by veteran Derek Fisher and Jordan Farmar.
Fisher has hit a lot of big shots in his lifetime, but his career is winding to a close. Farmar is a quality backup, but he is not starter material.

The team only made one major change in the offseason. The Lakers picked up forward Ron Artest, a risky move that many thought would seriously jeopardize the team's chemistry.

The bench is still solid with Farmar, Luke Walton and Shannon Brown providing some energy while giving the stars a breather.

The Lakers return almost the same team from a year ago, except this time they have a healthy Bynum. There is no reason the Lakers shouldn't represent the Western Conference in the NBA Finals with a chance to win it all again.
