Indiana Pacers 2008/2009 Season Preview
Posted 8/15/2008
The Indiana Pacers had a tumultous 2007-2008 campaign but made a late playoff push that came up short.
The Pacers are tired of the poor play on the court and their players appearing in the police blotter, so the rebuilding effort is underway in full force.
The team has grown tired of Jamaal Tinsley's off-the-court run-ins with the law and all the time he misses because of various injuries. Indiana is set to have an open competition for the starting point guard spot that will include Tinsley, Travis Diener, Jarrett Jack and T.J. Ford, who was acquired from Toronto via trade and is the favorite to land the job.
Ford will finally give the team a true point guard, someone who is looking to take care of the ball and distribute it to teammates before looking for his own shot. However, the trade with Toronto cost the team Jermaine O' Neal. While he may need a change of scenery and was certainly injury-prone, O' Neal was a strong presence in the low post.
Jack has shown he is a high energy player who can pass and score and take care of the basketball. He didn't get too much of an opportunity to play in Portland because of the logjam at point guard, but he will have the chance to blossom with the Pacers.
The team picked up Roy Hibbert in the NBA Draft, which gives the Pacers at least a solid backup in the low post and someone who could at least attempt to replace some of the production they received from Jermaine O' Neal.
Indiana also received forward Brandon Rush in the draft. He is a winner as his time as Kansas has shown and at the very least he will be a very valuable player off the bench. He will do a lot of the little things it takes to win.
Forward Danny Granger has really improved throughout his first three years in the league and is very close to becoming an All-Star caliber player. Mike Dunleavy also showed some signs of life last year, and the two could combine to form a solid scoring duo.
The Pacers should be improved this upcoming season, but unfortunately for them, so should several other teams in the Eastern Conference. Indiana should battle for a playoff spot and may be able to sneak in as one of the final seeds.
