Golden State Warriors 2008/2009 Season Preview

For a team with so much talent, it was a disappointing end to the 2007-2008 season for the Golden State Warriors.
After being in the playoff race the entire season, the Warriors collapsed down the stretch and failed to reach the postseason just one year after stunning the Dallas Mavericks in the first round.
Still, the Warriors managed to finish with a 48-34 record that would have put them right in the middle of the playoffs in the weaker Eastern Conference.
While a lot of talent returns for the Warriors this season, they took a major hit during the offseason.
Guard Baron Davis, who seemed set to return to the Bay Area, decided to declare for free agency and skipped town to sign a big contract with the Los Angeles Clippers. The move leaves the Warriors without their star point guard, forcing combo guard Monta Ellis to take on the point guard duties.
However, the Warriors did manage to make a splash in free agency by signing guard Corey Maggete to a multi-year contract. Maggette is a perfect fit for the up-tempo offensive pace run by the Warriors.
Another bit of good news is the return of head coach Don Nelson. Nelson left for Hawaii at the end of last season and planned to take a month or two to make a decision on whether or not to retire. He elected to come back and finish out the final year of his contract, which means the crazy, running offense will be around for at least one more season.
In the NBA Draft, the Warriors elected to take on a project by selecting forward Anthony Randolph. Randolph reminds many of last year's selection of Brandan Wright, who was disappointing in his first season as he tried to get acclimated to life in the big leagues.
Golden State is looking for big things out of Wright this season and they are hopeful that Randolph can be eased into the lineup and become a major factor a few years from now.
The Warriors should be good yet again, but losing Davis is a major blow. They will compete for another playoff spot but likely fall short again in the very tough Western Conference, which should be even more improved this year.
