Denver Nuggets 2008/2009 Season Preview
Posted 8/15/2008
The Denver Nuggets managed to squeeze into the playoffs last season but were embarassed in the first round by the Los Angeles Lakers.
After several seasons of making the playoffs but flaming out in the first round, it appears the Nuggets are set to overhaul their roster and go in a different direction.
The Nuggets traded center Marcus Camby to the Los Angeles Clippers in the offseason and received virtually nothing in return. Despite Camby coming off one of the best years of his career and being a great defender on a team that plays absolutely no defense, the Nuggets still felt the need to cut salary and ship the veteran elsewhere.
After more off-the-court issues this past season, Carmelo Anthony's name surfaced on the trading block throughout the summer. Despite constant denials from the team and Anthony pleading to stay in Denver and help bring home a championship, it did seem as if the Nuggets were interested in dealing him for the right price.
However, it does seems as though the Nuggets will hold onto Melo and hope that he can stay out of trouble off the court and became more of a team leader on it. I think Denver would also like to see Anthony exhibit a little more effort on the defensive end and become a better rebounder.
The leader of the Nuggets is a major question mark, although veteran guard Allen Iverson appears to have inherited the role. Iverson played well last season but has taken a beating throughout his career by driving recklessly into the lane despite his small frame. One of these seasons, we will see Iverson's production begin to decline, and it could be this upcoming season.
Losing Camby is a big blow for the upcoming season. The Nuggets will be hard-pressed to make the playoffs in the Western Conference given their current group of players.
