The Denver Nuggets traded Carmelo Anthony to the New York Knicks last season, but then found a way to hardly miss a beat without his presence.
It's rare that a team can trade away its star player, and one of the league's best, and not miss a beat. That seemed to be the case with Anthony, who seemed to distract the team with the constant rumors about his desire to play in New York.
The Nuggets made up for his loss by playing better as a team and stepping up their effort on the defensive end of the floor. The team really bought into head coach George Karl's philosophies, something that didn't necessarily happen when Anthony was with the Nuggets.
The team re-signed Nene Hilario in the offseason, which helped them retain their top low-post presence. If they can keep Al Harrington healthy and motivated, the Nuggets should have an advantage over most teams on the inside.
They also have Andre Miller and Ty Lawson running the show at point guard. Both guys are quick, especially Lawson, and like to push the ball and get up and down the court. That plays right into Karl's style.
The Nuggets are always a really tough team to beat at home, and that gives them a significant advantage right there. While they don't have elite talent, there are enough quality players on the roster to claim a playoff berth and maybe even put a scare into their first round opponent. Fans will not be disappointed in this season and the excitement it will hold.
